An Illustrated Talk & Book Signing with Rita Bradd, Clipper Ship ‘City of Adelaide’ BENEATH THE SOUTHERN CROSS
August 12 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm£6.00 – £10.00
City of Adelaide (also known as Carrick) is the oldest surviving composite-built clipper ship in the
world. Yet she was under threat of deconstruction at The Scottish Maritime Museum when local
author Rita Bradd discovered her and her plight, during the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race visit to
Greenock in 1999.
An obsession with City of Adelaide developed. Through research Rita found two rival groups
intended to rescue the ship from demolition. She also discovered a diary had been kept by a young
woman who sailed on the maiden voyage in 1864. When she learned the ship was to be awarded to
a group of businessmen from her namesake City in South Australia, Rita knew that someone had to
record the ship’s final voyage in tandem with that from the maiden voyage. She knew that that
‘someone’ had to be her.
Join us for an illustrated presentation of the ship’s history, Rita’s adventures with City of
Adelaide since 1999, and their voyage together to the other side of the world on a heavy-lift cargo
vessel crewed by 15 Ukrainians and 2 Russians.
This is also an opportunity to purchase a signed copy of colour illustrated hardback book ‘Clipper Ship City of
Adelaide BENEATH THE SOUTHERN CROSS’ (£30). 10% of sales will go to the ship’s conservation coffers,
and a further 10% will go to a charity supporting Ukrainian families.
