The Spott Sessions – Roo and Neil

July 8 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Join us for an evening of live music with one of the most exciting up and coming duos in traditional music. This, the first Session since the Covid hiatus, brings Roo and Neil to the hall for another unforgettable night of tunes.

Roo Geddes and Neil Sutcliffe combine their shared experience across Classical, Folk and Jazz to create original music for violin and accordion. Based in Glasgow, their compositions are inspired by landscape and people and by the ways in which music can evoke a sense of place and community. The pair first met as students of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Juniors’ School, aged 13. They quickly formed a close friendship and began collaborating musically throughout their studies until graduating in 2021 with Honours of the First Class.

In April 2022, the duo released their debut album, showcasing original compositions inspired by the people and places that create a feeling of ‘home’. In 2020, one piece from this collection was selected a winner of Feis Rois’ “In Tune with Nature” competition. They remotely composed, recorded, and filmed a new composition which celebrated the wildlife and landscape of the magical Taynish National Nature Reserve. This composition, alongside sets of traditional tunes and songs, was celebrated in their success as winners of the prestigious Danny Kyle Award in January 2021.

There will be a bar at this event; the bar will open with doors, at 6.45pm. Music from 7.30pm. There will be a 30 minute interval.

“Roo and Neil explore a musical landscape of such variety with such skill, it’s a privilege to be taken with them on their musical journey. They occupy that rare position where they can go in any direction they choose. They have a deep love and understanding for traditional music, coupled with an awareness of the world they find themselves in with all of its colours, tastes and sounds to explore. They bring a musical sincerity to their music which is the most valuable ingredient and as a result, with respect and courage they forge their own route through a musical landscape of endless possibilities. Their individual skills are supreme, and they are able to express rich and articulate nuance at any level. I find myself imagining their journey ahead and with the potential they have, I just can’t wait to hear them play next”.
